Previously, the DMR-6X2 could <a href=\"https:\/\/baofengtech.com\/staging\/\/using-the-dmr-6x2s-built-in-gps-receiver\/\">send APRS packets via DMR<\/a>, but now it can also do analog APRS, making it more versatile than ever. Here\u2019s how to set up analog APRS on your DMR-6X2.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"grid_12\">\n<div id=\"tabs\" class=\"wow fadeIn ui-tabs ui-widget ui-widget-content ui-corner-all\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"grid_12\">\n<p>First, you\u2019ll have to upgrade the firmware. Go to the <a href=\"https:\/\/baofengtech.com\/staging\/\/dmr\/\">DMR-6X2 Software and Firmware Repository<\/a> and download CPS &amp; Firmware 2.01. This package contains new firmware for the radio, new icons, and new customer programming software (CPS). Once you\u2019ve unzipped the download file, open README FIRST.pdf for instructions on how to install everything. Don\u2019t forget to update the icons and do a full MCU reset before proceeding.<\/p>\n<p>Now, you\u2019re ready to set up the analog APRS. Open up the CPS programming software and click \u201cAPRS.\u201d This will take you to the setup screen shown below.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-45603 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/baofengtech.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/dmr-6x2-aprs-setup-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"964\" height=\"695\" srcset=\"https:\/\/baofengtech.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/dmr-6x2-aprs-setup-2.png 964w, https:\/\/baofengtech.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/dmr-6x2-aprs-setup-2-600x433.png 600w, https:\/\/baofengtech.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/dmr-6x2-aprs-setup-2-768x554.png 768w, https:\/\/baofengtech.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/dmr-6x2-aprs-setup-2-640x461.png 640w, https:\/\/baofengtech.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/dmr-6x2-aprs-setup-2-400x288.png 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 964px) 100vw, 964px\" \/>APRS Auto TX Intervals (s)<\/strong>: This is the interval in seconds between APRS packet transmissions. When set to 180, the DMR-6X2 will transmit a pack every three minutes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Destination Call Sign<\/strong>: This defines the type of device sending the package. APBT62 is the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/aprs.org\/aprs11\/tocalls.txt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to-call<\/a>\u201d for the DMR-6X2.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SSIDs<\/strong>. These numbers define typical ways that you might be using APRS. For example, \u201c-9\u201d designates that you\u2019re a mobile station. See the <a href=\"http:\/\/zlhams.wikidot.com\/aprs-ssidguide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">APRS SSID Guide<\/a> for more info.<\/p>\n<p><strong>APRS Symbol Table, APRS Map Icon<\/strong>: The combination of these two characters define the icon that appears on the aprs.fi maps (and, presumably, other sites). For more information on the icons available, see the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.thelifeofkenneth.com\/2017\/01\/aprs-symbol-look-up-table.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">APRS Symbol Look-Up Table<\/a>. Since I walk around town frequently, I\u2019ve set my icon to a walking man.<\/p>\n<p><strong>APRS Signal Path<\/strong>: This setting describes the signal path an APRS packet transmitted by your DMR-6X2 will take. A setting of \u201cWIDE1-1WIDE2-1\u201d is suggested for this setting. For more information on APRS signal paths, see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpole-antenna.com\/2018\/09\/25\/aprs-ssids-paths-and-beacons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">APRS: SSIDs, Paths, and Beacons.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Transmission Frequency<\/strong>: 144.390 MHz is the most common APRS frequency in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Transmit Delay (ms)m Prewave Time (ms)<\/strong>: Set both of these to 600.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Transmit Power<\/strong>: Always set this to Turbo. Make sure that the transmit power in the channel setup is also set to Turbo. If set to another value, the DMR-6X2 will not send APRS packets.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve set this up, you have to set up an APRS channel. Setting it to another value will prevent the DMR-6X2 from transmitting APRS packets.<\/li>\n<li>APRS Report Type: Analog (obviously).<\/li>\n<li>Analog APRS PTT Mode: You can set this to \u201cBeginning of Transmission\u201d or \u201cEnd of Transmission.\u201d End of Transmission gives the digipeater a little time to hear your signal before you send the APRS packet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That should do it. To start sending APRS packets, select the APRS channel and press the push-to-talk switch. That will get the DMR-6X2 started sending out APRS packets at regular intervals.
