More Than a Basic GMRS Radio

A compact mobile system built for repeaters, scanning, NOAA, and custom channels

The GMRS-20V2 is built for users who want more than a basic compact GMRS radio. Add local repeaters, organize up to 200 custom channels, monitor NOAA and scanner receive channels, and use quad watch to stay aware of more activity at once. Whether installed in a vehicle or used as a compact base setup, it gives licensed GMRS users a cleaner, more capable way to build the radio system they actually want.

Range & Coverage Range depends heavily on antenna choice, antenna height, terrain, obstructions, installation quality, and whether you are using simplex or a repeater. With a proper GMRS mobile antenna and clean install, the GMRS-20V2 will generally outperform a handheld. Typical simplex range may be around 1–5 miles in-town or wooded areas, 5–15 miles in open rural terrain, and farther in ideal line-of-sight conditions. When using a well-placed GMRS repeater, coverage can extend much farther.
Additional Features Tri Watch, Display Sync, VOX hands-free operation, NOAA weather channels, FM radio, SOS alarm, tone scan, scan add/remove, nuisance channel skip, Busy Channel Lockout, Transmit Time-Out Timer, quick-add GMRS channels menu, adjustable scanning modes, adjustable squelch, DTMF keypad, 7-character channel naming, K1 accessory support with included adapter kit, and 2.5/5/6.25/10/12.5/25 kHz tuning steps.

    ———- REVIEW UPDATE ———-
Ok…. After receiving my PC04 programming cable and installing the CHIRP software on my MacBook Pro M1 I was able to easily download the profile from the radio, unlock the radio, and upload the new profile to the radio.

    HERE IS WHAT HAPPENED:

These radios are all shipped from factory with a MASTER DTMF code set for all radios the same. Meaning anybody who knows the factory code (which I do now) can literally “KILL” your radio if they want to because from factory they are set to listen to DTMF codes over the air.

What happened is here in Los Angeles California, there was someone out there sending DTMF Kill commands over the air to disable any BAOFENG radio via DTMF codes in the area that was using factory settings.

    WHAT TO DO:

You will need to get a PC04 cable as soon as you get the radio and change your Master DTMF pin code or disable the ability to remotely function the radio via DTMF. This way nobody can maliciously STUN or KILL your radio by using the factory DTMF commands.

Other than that…. the radio is great.
    __________
This radio switched to “Killed!” mode spontaneously.
I did not do any programming. I did not send any DTMF codes or whatever. All I did was take it out of the brand new box, plug into my cigarette lighter, connect an antenna, connect the handset and turn it on. That’s it.

After about an hour on channel 16 it switched to KILLED! and became inoperable.

I contacted support at Baofeng website and the support is TERRIBLE. Someone named “Katy” just send 1-line responses with no help. Bad customer support. She sends link to CHIRP with bad English 1-kine garbage replies. I told her… I DID NOT USE CHIRP. I do not know what that is. The radio was brand new. It did this on its own. I can program the radio but now I have to pay for a PC04 cable??

I did NOT break the radio.

    Great little radio:
+ Both mic/speaker & base unit are waterproof. Yay!
    + Loud little speaker.
+ Very small – easy to mount or throw in a daypack (I use the water-bottle pocket, for the ventilation).
+ Pretty easy to use & to program.
+ Comes with some NOAA weather channels pre-programmed. It’s easy to add other NOAA, marine, etc frequencies for reseive only.
    – I got this to use as a handheld/backpack radio with my local CERT. Unfortunately for me, since it’s FCC approved as a “mobile”, it won’t let me use the 167MH interstitial channels.
    – Even though you can direct tune to a broadcast FM station, it won’t let you program those stations as receive-only (which it does allow with ham/marine/weather frequencies).
    – The manual menus are tricky to use, but that’s understandable since you’re going in through a menu that’s on a mic.
    – The mic has two lines of display that I can’t find documented anywhere. curious

Great radio. Replacing a Midland MXT275. I wanted the multiple channel monitoring. Only thing I don’t get, Why did BTech go away from the microphone clip that everyone else uses??? I figured out where to hang it but I was set up for the old clip. Really wish they offered that option. Anyway, working good so far without issues. Would have gotten 5 stars if the standard mic clip was used.

Ok. First to address power output issues. You need to measure power output when connected to.a dummy load! Mine does 18.5 watts into.a dummy load. It will output less if you have poor SWR on your antenna.

The volume control issue isn’t too bad, once you figure it out. It becomes second nature.

I have not experienced intermod issues..

It’s a tiny radio. Fits pretty much anywhere. It’s mounting location is restricted by its short microphone cable. They should have made it longer.

Transmit and receive audio is great. I get mobile flutter when I drive, but that’s no fault of the radio.

The display is customizable and easy to read. The microphone buttons are not easy to read; but what can they do? They are laid out in such a fashion that I can easily
remember what does what while driving.

Channels are fully customizable, and compliant with FCC regulations. No legal mobile can transmit on the low power FRS channels. I just deleted them. Problem solved. You can add as many repeaters as you wish.

Programming with Chirp is easy. I recommend buying the programming cable.

All in all, a great radio.

Great radio for the price. I wanted a unit to use as a mobile and base. CHIRP works great with the recommended cable if your have a MacOS computer. A decent antenna goes a long way.

Be sure to image your radio right out the box before you do anything. Save a copy and rename it and use the copy as your CHIRP file. The original is only a backup. I had the Kill message pop up and reloaded the original back up. The kill setting happened right after I udpated the radio programming with CHIRP. No antenna was connected to the radio. Some of the reported Kill issues could be from Chirp. I have had an occassional issue pop up with Chirp with each radio I have. When in doubt, reset the radio, reinstall the backup, delete your previous Img file and create a new one.

This is a terrific little radio. The radio is a very small form factor, it fits in your hand. Programming the radio with chirp is very easy. I like that the radio allowes for more than 30 GMRS channels, I live in an area with many repeaters and if I only was able 1 repeater per the 8 repeater channels I would have to make sacrifices on what channel I wanted. This radio allowes for as many tx/rx GMRS channels as you would like. I really like the included NOAA channels.

I would have given this radio a five star review except for the interference, I also didn’t know that the ctcss tones can be set out of the frequency ranges that are normal. Was scanning for a 123.0and got a ctcss tone of 122.7??????????? Anyone got an answer for this, is this what’s allowing the interference through when scanning repeater frequencies, Katy said I should set a receive tone when scanning as I drive across the US.

love this product size. but, for offroad motorcycle use, we really need bluetooth to the headset or hand set. we have the 5w but looking to add more range.

Any chance you can incorporate BTooth?
