Great radio so easy to program and the clarity is so clear can’t wait to get the wireless mic

  2. 5 out of 5

Here is my honest review of what I believe to now be the best GMRS radio on the market at the $150 price point. I own 2 GMRS-V2’s and have used both Radioddity and Wouxun’s products for comparison.

    First, here are the pros:
    1. The app and Bluetooth programming are incredibly easy. Anyone can quickly program and customize this radio.
    2. IP67 certification and the build of the radio is very high quality and rugged. The battery is easy to remove and replace as well. Much easier than the V2.
    3. The screen is large and clear. The nav buttons are simple and you can easily ruin through menus.
    4. The GPS and phone mirroring is accurate and down right cool.
    5. I really like the USB-C charge port… no longer is a charge cradle needed.
    6. The channel groups/ zones came in handy so I can separate the standard channels from my local repeater channels and private channels.
    7. Finally, audio quality is clear and what I expect from BTECH.

Now for my list of tweaks:
    Hardware:
    1. I plan on buying more of these and wanted to change and store them in a gang charger. The battery does not have charger contacts for gang charger use.
    2. No Keypad… programming is easy in the app, but since there is no keypad, you have to scroll through a long alphanumeric list, FM stations, scroll through channels, and if you want to use the text message function it take forever.
    3. Need more customizable buttons. There are three capable of performing a total of 8 functions. You need some brain power to remember a double click for FM or a long click for group up.

    Software:
    1. Screen color and contrast. The current scheme is excellent for “dark” or night mode, however I could not see anything today in the sun. A “light” or day mode with a white background would fix that.
    2. Channel sync. I would love to have the channel name and frequency displayed. Currently only dual watch display is offered.
    3. CHIRP compatible. The app is easy but I had to reprogram my template into it. It would be nice to upload an existing template from CHIRP.
    4. Dual watch for channels in multiple groups. Dual watch can only be used for channels in the same channel groups.

So if you made it to this point, I love this radio. BTECH, you you can hit any of my wishlist of tweaks you’ll produce the perfect GMRS radio!

This is my 3rd BTech and it has not disappointed me. Nice feel, sounds great, App works very well. This is the way a radio should be able to be programed, wirelessly. Wireless mic will be great and hope other accessories are developed i.e. battery eliminator, case, extra batteries and a desktop stand.

Wireless firmware update is awesome and worked flawlessly! Great HT!

I was able to get a BTECH GMRS PRO about a week ago. I thought I would be able to connect it to the audio via Bluetooth in my Mazda Miata (2019) so that at speed, with the top down, I could still hear the radio if someone spoke on a GMRS channel. I was unable to do that, but today I was able to connect to an external speaker which is now paired with the radio. Does it provide loud enough sound to be heard – I don’t know (I think probably not), but in any event, my displeasure with the inability to connect to the car is mitigated by the ability to connect to the external speaker. All in all, does it do everything I expected, no, but does it do a lot more easily that the Baofeng UV82hp’s I own – absolutely. The utility of using my iPhone to manage the radio beats the heck out of CHIRP (not bashing CHIRP, just praising the app).

I just got it today which was about a month sooner then I expected from Amazon. This is just a preliminary review: The packing seems to be inadequate as I found both my radios off the simple cardboard mount with nothing to hold the radio onto it. The installation of the belt clip can be a bear. I had to use tweezers and philips head screw driver that would fit. The tool they send you is a joke. You get no charger wall wart but they do include a usb3 charger cable you plug into a usb charger port. I am waiting for the batteries to charge for further setup and testing

Great radio. BTech moving in the correct direction. Hopefully this becomes programmable with CHiRP. Can be a nightmare for many users who need to learn an app.

Phone App is clunky, but works well. Need to be able to turn all data off in order for this radio to really shine. I will be testing with a non-sim phone soon.

GPS isn’t too bad. Could definitely use some improvement. I frequently use Garmin for most of my hikes and other outdoor activities, so I am used to that.

Compass has some issues where I am at, due to field issues. Not happy with that for nav, but I know this area well.

I will prepend this as being somewhat new to GMRS, however I’ve owned a few radios and ham HTs and recognize what I like and don’t in a handset.

    First the likes:
Customer support is fantastic. You never want to hear about D.O.A. hardware, but it happens. Every manufacturing process has some failure rate, the key part is how it is handled when they happen. The radio out of the box seemed OK, but the left side buttons were unreliable. I would have returned it to Amazon and gotten a replacement, but there were none left at Amazon to order. I decided to contact BTECH, I got a response back same-day, I shared some details with them and did some testing. I had a return label the next day, and after a round-trip across the country I had a new radio. Amazing customer service, I thought for sure I would have been out and having to wait for the next shipment to come in. They never even attempted to blame the user, best electronics support I’ve had outside of Apple…but way better than how Apple handled my defective AirPod Pros (which were later recalled after they wouldn’t do anything).

The radio form factor is good, has a good feel physically and I like that it doesn’t use another desktop charger that doesn’t work with any other radio, I prefer USB charing (more on this in the dislikes).

The app is convenient, it is great not having to drag out a programming cable and make sure to get the radio onto an idle channel, setting the volume, and other annoyances of some radios (e.g. UV5-R/X/G). The app is decent, it lets you instantly switch either active receiver to whatever channel in the active group you want at a tap. Managing channels in the app is easy enough (more on this later). Being able to actually update the firmware and the process being easy is amazing, especially at this price-point.

The audio relay is a great feature, either as a quick and dirty emergency repeater or to give you the ability to easily range test solo.

    Dislikes:
This is a long list, mostly because this radio _could_ be fantastic. But the radio is defined in combination of the radio firmware and with the app. That said, BTech could probably fix almost all of my dislikes in software updates.

First dislike is the one that cannot be fixed with software, so I’ll get it out of the way. This is not the only electronic device with this problem, but it is entirely disingenuous to claim it has “USB C charging. It has USB C *port* charging, it cannot charge from a USB C *charger*. I don’t know who decided to save 10-cents on installing a resistor to allow the USB C *port* to activate a USB C charger, it requires a draw down (aka resistance) between two wires in the cable…so instead, you can only charge it from a USB-A to USB-C cable. Idiotic and annoying, so you aren’t free from carrying legacy chargers and “proprietary” cords. Fix this, sell all of the early adopters a new battery back with this fixed at a discount. Release a V2 of the radio that ships with the fixed battery that is USB-C *compliant* so that we can use USB-C PD chargers. I am only keeping them because at least it didn’t use a desktop charger with a USB-C port with these problems.

Now as to the software misses, I work in software and have high standards and these are all items that can be fixed. BTECH, you can thank me later for giving you your backlog for free.

    Radio firmware:
    Where is VFO/frequency mode?

No Roger beeps. Easy fix in firmware, some users may get sad. I wouldn’t care, but now it is a lot harder to explain when it is someone else’s “turn” to talk.

    Phone App:
No ability to edit channel groups except when actively connected to a radio, in fact you can’t do anything with the app without being connected to a radio.

No ability to change which channel groups are active on the radio, you can only do that from the radio through 9+ button clicks.

No true VFO mode. You can only quick-edit a channel (tap-hold), but the radio will continue to show the channel “Title”. Let me “tap and hold” on the top or bottom channel selection “bar” and just key in a frequency, and then show the frequency on the radio rather than channel info.

This large magnificent screen on the radio and there is no way to have it show any details about the channel other than the title. Seriously? I can only get 1 line of this 12 line screen for channel details? If you want more info you *have to* use the app, but at least the option is there I guess.

No support to export to share channel groups, likewise no ability to import them. So the only easy way to share channel groups across radios is to pair them all to the same phone, at that point it is pretty easy as the user defined channel groups show up for every radio you are connected. Or perhaps to pair your radio to someone else’s phone and have them import the channel group. When you do “import channels from radio” it doesn’t let you pick which group, it just imports whatever group is “active” on the radio.

When I do sync a channel group to the radio, perhaps you can use the _user provided_ channel group names that was synced to the radio and show those in the App…so that you don’t accidentally overwrite a group not knowing which you already saved to. Instead it always just prompts to to upload to “Channel Group 1” (numbers 1-6) regardless of if you already uploade something there. Which if you haven’t uploaded channels in a while it is easy to forget, or perhaps you are just wanting to update one of the groups you had synced before. Too bad, you get to play roulette with 1:6 odds. Accidentally select Channel Group 1? Too bad, you just overwrote all of the factory channels and if you didn’t previously import them you get to factory reset your radio!!!

Reference John’s mention of the belt clip install: it’s a minor thing, but it was very easy for me. The correct screwdriver is essential. I held the radio and clip in place with my left hand, then rolled it over so the screen is facing up. I placed one of the screws on the upward-pointed screwdriver, then simply raised it up through the hole(s) in the clip and engaged the threads. Much easier than trying to write it. Screw #2 went much easier after I lightly tightened the #1 screw.

Love this radio! Been waiting quite a few years for an ht that will do what this does. Thank You Btech!!! Need a Ham version!!! In the mean time, how about working with Critter Map Software/Backcountry navigator to get support for your app? Backcountry Navigator supports aprsdroid by displaying aprs objects on the backcountry navigator map. BCN has the advantage of storing offline maps with many different map choices. The aprs support in BCN is easy, menu setting that starts listening to aprsdroid when the BCN “My location center” button is pressed.

For the love of God people, TAKE THE BATTERY OFF TO INSTALL THE BELT CLIP!!!!!

    When will the speaker mic

Loving the radio’s so far. They work really well and with the Nagoya antenna’s the range is really good. Text message over radio seems to work well.
Couple of things I wish for tho:
    1. Be able to pick channels from different Channel Groups while in Dual Watch mode.
    2. A way to export/import the Channel Groups (Chirp) on laptop. Would make programming several radios a bit easier.
    3. iOS app needs button to be able to pick channel group. (Suppose to be come in app update per BTech Support).

Notice that if you leave the battery connected, it will slowly draw power from it and kill it. I’d suggest disconnecting the battery any time it’s not in use, especially if this is part of any kind of “oh shit!” kit or bugout bag.

Good radio. 2 problems, Noaa alerts are LOUD. Put that on the volume control.
USB-C to USB-C charging does not work. I tried 5 different cables. 3 adapters, none work. USB-C to USB-A is only way to charge the radio.

I really enjoy my GMRS PRO. It’s a good radio for the price, but I have a hard time calibrating the compass. I am unable to move the radio in figure eight in a quick motion. As far as the radio, I enjoy the Bluetooth Programming from my cellphone.

I’m looking at this radio for use in paragliding communications. Specifically, what attracts me is the Bluetooth capabilities. I’m assuming I can use my own BT earbuds? What about the Bluetooth PTT function? When will that be available separately?

My girlfriend and I love having our GMRS Pros with us when we are out exploring in the backcountry. Having the capability to send each other our locations without relying on cell service is a HUGE feature that we really enjoy having, not to mention we haven’t yet been in a situation where we can’t talk to one-another (at one point we were 3.5mi apart, according to our radios, and we were talking loud and clear). Excellent radios and I can’t wait for them to add more features via firmware updates.

GMRS-PRO is ahead of so many with bluetooth and App to program from phone. Its IP rating above most.
Im using for security in public as such the ability to have a usb earpiece like The competitor Retevis earpiece has a simple “touch to talk” works great for hands free bluetooth with much more private communication with teams in public and the earpiece design stays put well.
Need this one item to make this a very great product as this radio is just so much better

It’s great, simply to use, tons of features to grow into if you want to dig deeper later on. The app is good and the battery seems to last a good amount of time. I purchased another different brand, a brand that starts with W and that radio has a few more features but it’s complicated, you need to memorize codes and sequences to do certain things. This little B-Tech is perfect for the greater number of people wanting something more, easy to use and feature rich and that can be put away and then picked up several months later and remember how to use it! Buy this one every time!

This radio is definitely unique for the GMRS world. Like all radios, It has a lot of pros but there are a few cons. The build quality and durability are outstanding. It’s IP67 weatherproof rated, and the case feels solid. The screen is large and clear. The onboard compass and GPS make it a solid choice for hiking or adventuring in unfamiliar places. Bluetooth is almost expected on modern devices, although, most GMRS radios do not incorporate it. The phone app makes programming very simple and easy to do even in the field. The battery life is average, however the USB-C charging ability makes recharging on the go simple in a vehicle or even with a power bank. Areas that can be improved on are the speaker mic plug which is not the standard K1 connection. The added Bluetooth does offset the need for a physical connection. Another consideration is that to use a device that physically connects, the radio looses its ability to be IP 67 with the cover removed. In the event you absolutely need a connection, Btech does offer an adapter to use your standard K1 mics. Another note, the antenna is not removable. This is not a design flaw, but an FCC requirement due to the radio’s ability to transmit data. Another positive is that continued firmware updates will improve the functionality of the radio. Over all, the GMRS PRO is an excellent GMRS Radio.

I recently got into GMRS so I can get the family on the air and these GMRS pro radios are great for the riding ATVs and motorcycles. We have three of the Pro radios, PTTs, and Bluetooth headsets installed in our helmets. And a mobile radio “base station” at the house. Allows us to talk and hear while riding over longer distances than the helmet communicators.

The app is pretty good also will be looking more into the map and location sharing features (atak stuff) in the future.

I purchased 2 GMRS PROs and I have enjoyed using them. If I could add something to the radio, it would have to be to the ability to monitor conventional digital systems, such as DMR and NXDN for those who enjoy railfanning and talking with friends or family via FRS/GMRS channels. Oh heck, I think have the ability to add MURS would be a plus. However, that would require re certification to add the ability to transmit on MURS.

It definitely is NOT your Granddaddy’s CB! This thing is amazing, BUT it does come with a higher than normal learning curve. It would be great if BTECH would put out an extended video that goes through the setup, programming and use of the radio. Lots of pros, and a few cons, but they have already been mentioned by previous posters.

I normally do not write reviews, but this radio deserves one. I lost this radio in the woods while setting up a land navigation course that I teach. I found it three months to the day later. It went through several large thunderstorms while sitting in the woods. I took it home and dried it out. Then I charged it back up, and It worked!! It both transmits and receives. Bluetooth still works with the app. That is quality. That is quality.
