BTECH UV-5X3: Engineered for Superior Performance and Resilience
Familiar Case, but a Fully Upgraded Radio
When selecting a radio for your communication needs, you deserve a product that offers not just basic features but advanced capabilities, robust construction, and premium performance. BTECH's UV-5X3 stands out as a perfect embodiment of this principle.
Don't be fooled by its familiar exterior; we've significantly updated and upgraded the UV-5X3 while maintaining full backward accessory compatibility. We believe in progress, but not at the expense of convenience and value.
Tailored for Amateur Bands
Unlike many radios that aim for 'general-purpose' performance, the UV-5X3 is specifically fine-tuned for optimal performance in amateur bands. This translates into superior reception and transmission quality, ensuring that your voice is clearly heard and messages received with unrivaled clarity.
Future-Focused Charging
The UV-5X3 utilizes a USB-C rechargeable battery, a standard that's quickly becoming the norm. This universal compatibility allows you to charge your device from multiple sources, bypassing the need for specific cables or adapters.
Premium Quality Components: The Foundation of BTECH UV-5X3's Superior Performance

IP54 Weather Resistant
|
Snow, rain, or shine you can feel free to use your UV-5X3 radio no matter what the weather conditions are. The UV-5X3 is weather resistant and splash proof. |
Unmatched Tri-Band Versatility
|
A step above the average dual-band radios, the UV-5X3 brings the game-changing advantage of tri-band functionality. It operates on VHF, 1.25M, and UHF frequencies, offering an extended range of communication possibilities. This broader spectrum allows you to connect over different frequency bands, ensuring clear and robust signals in a variety of scenarios. Whether you're coordinating with a team during emergency responses, tuning into local weather stations, or simply keeping in touch with fellow amateur enthusiasts, the UV-5X3's tri-band versatility ensures reliable and flexible communication. This is not just a feature; it's a significant upgrade that empowers you to communicate more efficiently and effectively. |
BTECH BL-5 USB-C Charging
The BL-5 battery now includes USB-C charging, providing users with greater flexibility and convenience in powering their devices. With this feature, you can charge the battery directly using a USB-C cable, or you can still use the CH-5 desktop charger if you prefer.
The USB-C charging feature makes it easy to charge your BL-5 battery on the go, using a power bank or a laptop with a USB-C port. This means you no longer have to rely on the CH-5 desktop charger, which may not always be available or convenient to use.
Revolutionary Remote Capabilities
Exclusively In-House Designed Features Setting the BTECH UV-5X3 Apart from Other Similar Looking Radios
Display Synchronization
An exciting, new feature on the UV‑5X3 takes full advantage of the LCD's dual line display. In the past the dual display allowed you to monitor two different frequencies at once. Unfortunately, for user's that only wanted to monitor a single channel, the secondary line was of no use... until the UV‑5X3!
The UV‑5X3 allows users, who want to display the most information at once, to synchronize the display. This allows the LCD to show both the channel's frequency and channel name simultaneously. Display synchronization allows the user to maximize the available information seen at a glance!

Modify the Scanning List
A brand new menu allows for one of the biggest conveniences while scanning: Modifying the Scanning List!
Before the UV‑5X3, you couldn't manage the channel scan list without a computer. The brand new menu in the UV‑5X3 allows you to easily add and remove channels from the scanning list. Have a nuicanse channel that you want removed from the scan list? You no longer need to go home to a computer to remove it: A simple menu allows you modify your channel scan list without a computer
Channel Mode Modifications
The UV‑5X3 comes out of the rut that all other UV‑5 series radios are stuck in. The UV‑5X3, built with the amateur radio operator in mind, allows channel modifications on-the-fly.
Previously and on other current UV‑5 models, you were forced to delete a channel and then recreate it from scratch if you wanted to alter any settings.
The UV‑5X3 allows common edits to the channels: Such as adding, changing, or removing the privacy tones (CTCSS & DCS); or changing the power level. You no longer have to delete and recreate the channel over simple channel modifications.
Scan a Frequency Range
Scanning in frequency mode, just became practical! Exclusively on the BTECH UV‑5X3: You are able to scan through a specific frequency range.
Scanning frequencies before the UV‑5X3 required the user to scan the full frequency band they were using. This was not practical if you only wanted to watch for activity on a particular section of the band (such as only 222-225MHz in the above pictured example). The UV‑5X3 will scan at the frequency step you select in menu, which allows you to scan by increments from 2.5 to 50KHz. You can now scan through a fine tuned portion of the receiving band without having to wait and scan the whole band!

UV-5X3: A Better Receiver than our Imitators!
Unlike our peers we do not take an existing radio off the shelf and simply apply 'a different firmware'. The UV-5X3 was from the ground up - built for Amateur Users! It takes time to properly build a product dedicated for a specific purpose. A properly designed radio, means that the receiver and transmitter will outperform in clarity, reach, and performance in comparison to those other radios that simply had that magic 'firmware flash'.

Great radios

Would love to see future models come out with the white on black didpays which are a lot easier to see in all light sources

Great handheld, I travel a great deal and the “SCAN ADD” is a fantastic, easy to use. Very clear reception. Strong transmit signal for 5 Watts. I did add a UHF, VHF, 220 Hz Nagoya NA-320A antenna for walking and convenience while hiking or biking.
Mr. Edgar Graham –
Very good radio, fit for purpose, compact and easy to operate. The instruction manual is comprehensive and easy to understand.

I’ve had this handheld for a little over 2 years. Easy setup with chirp. Fits my casual use well, al1 three bands come in well. I can hit local repeaters about 30 miles away. I did buy a diamond triband antenna for it, convenience of not switching antennas. I take this camping, I just enjoy downloading local stations before we go camping and listen to local nets.

Just passed my license test and wanted to get into HAM with an HT. This triband radio is great! The manual was very good for a new operator and although the 1.25m is not as popular it is also less intimidating for local simplex practice. As soon as the tri-band mobile/base is back in stock (Amazon) I will be getting one of those to complete my “learning” rig. These radios are fit for purpose and are priced at a point that lets someone get into the hobby. I put off HAM most of my life for two reasons (didn’t want to learn CW, which that was finally removed from the test) and the “startup” cost. I know it is a price point issue but wish the firmware was upgradable, however very happy with the performance and ease of use. Like mentioned, scan add is awesome.

I simply works. A nicely versatile unit. The big 3800 mA battery with USB charging is a plus (a note on the USB battery charger; the first “Smart Charger” mildly fried itself, a second one seems to work fine). The number of accessories is nice also. It works with an Easy Digi interface better than the Icom T70 as well as the BTECH digital interface. The narrow form factor fits into the side pockets on bib overalls or carpenter pants. When attached via the belt clip to the rear bicycle brake cable against the head tube, the 3800 mA battery has the mass to hold the radio stable when riding. The after market Nagoya 3-band antenna was handier here than the two rubber duckies. It is now replaced by the Diamond 3-band antenna which subjectively seems to work a bit better and is not quite as long. Hoping info useful. 73, KI7MBR

REAL FINE PROGRAMS AND INFORMATION.

THIS is my go-to handheld. I also love the Radioddity GS-5B, but for tri-band, the UV-5X3 with the 3800mAh battery is great and will run for nearly 24 hours without a charge (12-18 with a heavier duty cycle… still very impressive). 73, WX2JOE

What I like about the UV-5X3 is that it is tri-band and that it can display the name and frequency together, which almost no radio can do. What I don’t like is that when displaying the name and frequency together the A/B button no longer works. I would still like to be able to flip between two channels with A/B. It also scans too slowly. One would think they would be able to at least double the scanning speed. I also don’t like the short seven character names. Short names appears to be an issue with nearly all radios from all brands, although quite a few radios only allow six and at least one allows eight characters. It would help a lot if they could get it to even ten characters, and yes it would probably require a new display.

This is my favorite semi-cheapie because of the ability to specify a scan range in order to make up for the abysmal scan speed of Baofeng hardware. It’s a little buggy in the sense that you have to enter the range every single time you hit the scan button and cannot simply continue a previously entered scan after pausing to monitor, but it’s still quite useful and should really be something you can get without spending more for the 220 band which you probably do not care about at all.
I really want to like the “sync” feature which allows you to use both lines of the display to show the name *and* the frequency of a channel, but it’s been sloppily hacked together with no regard for state management in other areas of the firmware. The only time the code actually syncs the A and B lines is when you flip through the channels via the keypad. If you flash it from CHIRP you can easily wind up with a mismatched A and B line which leaves you terribly confused.
Even more confusing, if you enable dual monitoring AND display syncing at the same time, it works, but not in a way that makes any sense whatsoever. The display is always going to show the A channel. The B channel will still exist but you cannot see what it is or change it in any way without first disabling the sync feature. If something comes in over the B channel while display sync and dual monitoring are both enabled you will hear it and assume that it is coming from the A channel because that’s what the display shows. You might think that hitting the A/B toggle would let you switch between the two, but nope, all this button does in sync mode is move the little triangle up and down for no reason whatsoever.
It’s tempting to call these situations edge cases, but they really aren’t. If the person leading the charge on this firmware rev didn’t feel like handling the basics of the feature then they should have simply made display sync and dual monitoring mutually exclusive options which could not both be enabled at the same time. That would have been a bit of a bummer but it at least would be understandably consistent and not leave you in situations where you have no idea where a signal is coming from.

I’ve had two of these for many years. While I have an AllStar node now (running off an Alinco DR-235), I used to run an EchoLink node off one of the UV-5X3’s (on a 220 simplex freq). The remote control commands (which do work with the UV-5X3) were convenient if I wanted to disable/enable the node. I’ve moved on to AllStar now (which also runs EchoLink), but I first “cut my teeth” using just two UV-5X3’s. Also, even though I have a Kenwood TH-D74, if I’m going out to do outdoor activities like boating, I take one of the UV-5X3’s instead of the Kenwood. I have a MoblinkD TNC3 if I want to do APRS with it also. Decent HT and a good one for a new amateur to start off with and be able to enjoy all three bands.

I’ve owned UV-5R***, GT-3’s and countless other Baofeng radios for over 10yrs, theres a lot to love about them, they cover frequency ranges unheard of in the past especially for their bargain price, I was gifted a UV‑5X3 a year ago which I love and have just ordered another one here from Baofengtech and felt the need to comment, but can’t add a lot more except to confirm the countless other positive reviews, this firmware is actually a big update to previous, it makes a worthwhile difference, plus if you already know these radios its incredibly easy to programme them via Chirp as its exactly the same as all the previous UV_5R*** radios, for functionality/cost they get an easy 10/10, here in Australia they cost the same as a stupid pack of 20 cigarettes, its a no brainer, test one out! 🙂
