Great radio
Barney KL7HNY –
I love this rig. I bought my first one in 2016 to use as a demo for local public safety folks. It turns out that the radio is fairly intimidating for a lot of the intended users. Also, many of the local groups here in NC are signing up for user groups on the state’s “V.I.P.E.R.” 7/800 MHz trunked system. But for the smaller, volunteer agencies, they seem great. I simply program them as their chiefs allow (with CHIRP) and leave the VFO function locked out.
Most of the smaller departments don’t have budgets to cover /\/\ or Harris P25 radios, but will reimburse the individual members for anything up to around $225. This covers a radio kit, spare battery, HD spkr/mic, stubby fireground antenna, and a few $$ for me — this is, after all, a business.
I keep a few PTT switches & boots, pots, jacks, speakers and internal mics. They’re easy to service for anyone who’s ever worked with SMD devices.
I did purchase an antenna retaining nut spanner — looks like a miniature tire lug T-wrench — because the nuts to loosen, especially if the users are constantly switching out the larger Nagoya antennas I supply with the stubbies. Two hints for that: Clean the threads on the nut and the jack with some 99% isopropyl alcohol and let them dry. Then put a dab of “Sally Hansen’s Hard as Nails” pale pink nail polish on the thread before you spin on the nut. It’s great as a kinda weak Thread Lock (I use it for holding sideplate screws on S&W revolvers, f’r instance) and the pale color lets you know at a glance if a particular radio has been so prepped. Also, the volume pot knob on several of the Baofeng handhelds have 4 little bumps molded on the bottom edge of the knob. Exact right spacing, and no wiggle/slop in the four slots in the top of the nut, and et voilà! Nut is now tight and will stay snug.
I’ll probably start offering a somewhat simpler radio to some of these folks, something with just volume, channel, and scan. Most of my customers don’t know I’m a retired paramedic/firefighter and undercover State Trooper. One department’s comm center director was trying to tell me how simple radios need to be for their firefighters. He related a scenario wherein a firefighter is placed in a featureless room, no windows, no carpet, just a door. The firefighter is handed two one-inch diameter ball bearings. The door is closed for 15 minutes. Upon opening the door, one bearing will be broken, and the other is missing.
So I’ll be looking for something simple, Part 90 accepted, durable, and not a bazillion dollars per copy.
