    I’ve been interested in something comparable to the BTECH GMRS-PRO, but for HAM bands ever since its. Mid-August they released the UV-PRO, which sort-of fits this description. Mine arrived today. I was mainly interested in (1) the APRS digital mode, and (2) Bluetooth connectivity (both to the phone and to headsets).

    The first thing I noticed about the UV-PRO is that it is heavy — much, much heavier than the other handsets I’ve used before. I’m not sure if this is the waterproofing, or because the frame is mostly metal, but this might be factor for some uses like backpacking or hiking. At 300+g it sags on my belt, etc. It feels about twice as heavy as a BF-F8HP (which I was using before).

    In terms of initial impressions: the unit seems solid, and the audio quality is great. I’m getting clear signal reports, audio is crisp both on the speakers and via a Bluetooth headset.

    As noted, I was mainly interested in the APRS capability, and this is where things get interesting: First, it is technically possible to do most work from the front panel, but this is poorly documented. It wasn’t until I upgraded the firmware, and read the release notes, that I learned I could address messages to callsigns via the “: ” convention. For example, to hit the APRS SMS gateway, I can begin my messages “SMS: ” and things will generally work. To message my other handled unit, I’d use “KK7CMT-5: “, etc. Of course, the same convention works from the connected phone app, and typing is much easier there. Generally, things would be much clearer, if there was an explicit “To” field to fill in.

    APRS position beaconing also works very well, and I didn’t have much trouble setting that set up. However, I do wish it supported some option to limit precision, and for smart updates (e.g., don’t beacon as quickly when I’m not moving). Maybe this can come in a future firmware.

    On the other hand, receiving APRS messages was more of a pain. First, I needed to include my callsign and SSID in both the APRS Settings (which makes sense) AND the Signaling Settings (which, I thought was limited to their proprietary BSS protocol). When I just used one, I couldn’t get it to work. Once I figured that out, I also learned that the internal AX.25 decoder is not a sensitive as what I’m used to (Direwolf), and requires both a clear clean signal and a transmission that stays open just a little longer than you might expect. Once a message is received it can be read from the front panel, and replies are easy and straightforward — but all messages are deleted from the unit when it is powered down. This makes it a pain to reply to prior contacts from one session to the next. An address book, or a list of programmable message prefixes would be a huge upgrade (recall, addressing is handled by starting messages with the “callsign: ” prefix.

    A few other random radio quirks:

    While you can pair a Bluetooth headset and control volume via headset buttons, the volume settings can quickly get out of sync. For example, it will show as having the loudest volume despite being very low. The only way I’ve found to get them back in sync is use the volume dial on the handset.

    The channel scanning feature is also not easy to find. Rather than hitting a scan button you need to open Settings->Radio Settings->Scan->Checked. I ended up mapping this to one of the programmable side buttons (requiring the phone application to configure).

    Finally, while it is nice to be able to program the unit from the phone, I wish I could load in a spreadsheet or similar (like CHIRP) to batch upload a channel list. Programming each channel one by one, on the phone, is still a huge pain. Likewise, channels are divided into 6 groups of 30. I thought I would like this, but it turns out I would much prefer a long linear channel list. It’s a pain to change channel groups from the front panel of the handset (Settings->Radio Settings->Channel Group->Group 1). I mapped these to the programmable buttons as well.

    An amateur or part 90 radio license is required to transmit with this radio.

    This radio is a tri band amateur radio. It receives and transmits on the 2 meter, and 70 cm bands. It also receives the civilian aircraft band.

    This radio has many unique features. It has send and receive APRS capability. It has transmit and receive I-gate capability. It has digipeater capability (untested as of this review date). It has an relay (parrot) function that receives and retransmits the received audio. It has a nonstandard microphone connector. BTECH sells an adapter to allow K1 style accessories. A bluetooth microphone is available also.

    Transmit and received audio is great. The radio has a mic gain control.

    The radio is programmed via a smartphone application. Also, most radio functions can be set and adjusted from the app. The app does NOT need to be running for the APRS and other functions to work. The radio has a GPS system and can work autonomously.

    APRS is awesome, supporting send and receive. It supports all common APRS symbols and allows you to send and receive messages. The I-gate works well, sending received stations to APRS-IS and receiving the same. There appears to be digipeater capability also. I haven’t tested this yet and am not sure if it is fully supported in the app yet. This radio uses standard amateur AX.25 protocol for amateur use and a proprietary “BSS” protocol for business/Part 90 use.

    The radio uses AX.25/BSS to identify and indicate position for group use and can display onscreen the bearing of other UV PRO radios in the group. It can also display bearings of received APRS stations.

    This radio has more features than any other analog radio I’ve ever seen. It is firmware upgradeable, and the app is upgradeable. This future-proofs the radio and allows future development of the unit. I look forward to the future with this series.

    The price is very attractive. You get a lot with what you pay for. I highly recommend this radio.

    I haven’t played with the radio much, but it seems like a solid radio. I would like to see Btech add the NOAA monitoring to one of the programmable buttons. So far, I have been getting great signal reports. I am having trouble setting up the APRS, but I am pretty sure I have narrowed it down to my phone being the problem.

    Overall this is a lot of radio for the money. The KISS TNC upgrade makes it an excellent tool for amateur radio emergency communications. The app works well, once you’ve spent some time with it, as do the menus.

    I was able to successfully program the radio by copying channel information into .CSV file and uploading it through the app. There are instructions in a blog post on the website.

    Signal is clean and power seems to be true to advertised specs.

    I would have liked to have seen more channels and the system of Banks (6 banks of 30 channels each) limits flexibility of use.

    I would like to see a software upgrade that would at least allow a user to select a different Bank for each of the 2 bands, when in that mode. Being able to monitor 1 Amateur channel in Bank 2, and 1 Business channel in Bank 5 at the same time would be very useful.

    Overall seems to be a very good radio for the money. I appreciate the updates and hope the keep supporting the radio well into the future.

    The radio works well. I really like it. The only problem I see is that the battery doesn’t last long for 12 hours of work.
    Also the volume button is very sensitive, you have to be careful that it does not move.
    I liked the one I had before better, which was the BTECH DMR-6X2

    I have a closet full of HTs (Wouxuns, Baofengs, TIDRadios) but this UV-Pro is my FAVORITE! It’s built solid, I feel comfortable being out in the weather with it, like having NOAA Alarm that pops on if there is a warning, and it plays right through my bluetooth earbuts I also use with my phone! Just have to get to learning APRS and we are golden.

    Side note, love my Btech GMRS-Pro as well.

    Solid, good radio. Definitely worth the price. Menus are intuitive, and the radio, being able to be programmed from your cell phone is a plus. The audio is a little tinny. But the BS-22 helps. I like to scan the local HAM and GMRS repeaters, and I have noticed an issue with the scan and where it stops. I may not do a good job of describing the issue my apologizes in advance, but here I go. We have multiple repeaters in my area, at opposite ends of the county that have the same Tx frequency but different PL tones. For example repeaters ‘A’, ‘B’, and ‘C’ all have the same Tx frequency but different PL tones. When not in scan mode, I can select each of the channels (repeaters) separately and the repeater for the selected channel will be heard. Confirming I have correctly programmed the PL tone. While monitoring on a separate radio. Repeater A will activate but the UV-PRO while scanning will typically stop on repeater ‘B’ and/or ‘C’. No audio will come through the speaker. I hope this is something BTECH will address and fix in a future firmware update. In the meantime I have simply removed the other repeaters. Not convenient, but it fixes the problem.

    I recently downloaded UV-PRO app to my Android phone but I looked at channel grouping or zone and it shows only 16 channels per group. The radio supposed to hold 30 channels per group. Either I downloaded the wrong app or I need to wait for Radio to arrive and Pair it. Of course, there’s an update that has down on app itself. Well, I know enjoy my GMRS PROs, so I know I’ll appreciate my new UV-PRO once it arrives.

    I like this video, but I don’t love it. B-Tech, you are so close to making this a great radio. Sustains: USB-C, dual band monitor, airway receive, color ways, able to pair to phone, GPS, and APRS. Improves: Use kenwood K1 two pin connector and improve sound quality. Make these improvements and I’ll buy two more.

    The radio arrived two or three weeks ago, and I can’t put the radio down. As far as the channel grouping, I was wrong. The software allows for 30 channels per group or zone as other manufacturers organize their radios. The one thing I wish BTECH is radio that supports DMR and IDAS/NXDN for some Amateur Radio Repeaters are either DMR or IDAS/NXDN. As a Railfan, if this radio had IDAS/NXDN capabilities, it would make monitoring AAR channels easy. Of course, unless a railroad employee owns one, no one may transmit. But listening the AAR channels, especially when on Amtrak as a passenger, makes the trip more interesting. Listening to the train crews and dispatchers knowing why the train is diverted into the siding and hearing the equipment defect detectors.

    I have to say, I like my BTECH UV-PRO for I do use it on 2m and 70cm. I also use on GMRS, even though it’s part 90 not 95. The radio is overall a good radio for the price, which there are manufactures that will put same level of quality, but overcharge with or without tariffs. There are a few things I would like to see added the radio, but that would raise the price quite a bit. I’d like the BTECH UV- PRO have DMR and IDAS/NXDN. But for now, what can I say? The APRS and Bluetooth Programming, plus wireless cloning to other radios, even to GMRS pro. It’s wonderful radio.

    I bought this radio from Amazon almost six months ago. It’s very solidly built and works well. The reviews above speak volumes to its merits. However, it falls short on three points.
    1) Wireless or proprietary programming; The UV-Pro is not currently compatible with CHIRP programming software. The UV-Pro requires their proprietary OEM programming software or programming through a celllphone app. The difficulty lies in that I need to be able to download a large table of frequencies, tones, repeater offsets, etc. No one in my area has managed to share that table for my UV-Pro. Furthermore, that frequency table is subject to change. Currently changes have to be entered manually.
    2) Programming cable: BTech does offer a “BTECH GMRS-PRO/UV-PRO K1” work-around so that K1 USB programming cables and accessories can be adapted to the M1 socket on the radio. This is one more point of failure. I need to be able to reach in a bag of 15 or so USB programming cables to find the K1 USB adapter and then this additional M1 adapter.
    3) KISS TNC: This works very nicely using WoAD, Winlink and APRSdroid for transmitting/receiving 1200 baud packet data. An improvement would be to add 9600+ baud wideband data using Winlink/VARA-FM.

    This radio is fantastic to use. 2m 70cm, APRS, GPS. This is what I use most. Its ip67 so its a great radio to use outdoors without worrying about getting caught in bad weather or dropping your radio in any type of water, puddles extra. I really like having seporate banks of channels so I. can separate channels into my own customized groups. If you need to quickly program a new channel into the radio in the feild its is VERY easy to do using the connected app on your phone. Just tapand hold on a channel location you want to program then type in the info, DONE! The reception is better than some of my other radios. The other reason I like this radio so much is Baofeng Tech support. I had a question about programing and sent an email. The next day I received a responce!! Answered my question and I was good to go! Later I discovered, if the radio was et to receive weather alerts and an alter was sent… the weather alert to e would sound a MAXIMUM volume and you could not turn it down using the volume button. You had to live through the maximum volume tone until the tone was done. I contacted support about it in an email. Again a quick response and they were aware of this issue and were working on it. The NEXT DAY I received an email with a link to new firmware. I downloaded the new firmware and it fixed the weather alert issue! Customer support especially GREAT customer support is hard to find. Baofeng Tech really cares about their customers and really care about the products they sell. After having the UV-Pro for several months now I’m thinking I’m also going to pickup the UV-50 Pro as a base station for the house.

    Really good radio. I like mine but wish it was Chirp programmable. I was surprised so many of my ham buddies have this radio. One guy has all 4 units from the different distributors (Vero, Radtel, Radioddity, etc). I programmed it with the local repeaters but I use it primarily as my APRS beacon when I take my QRP bag out. It can go all day with GPS enabled & beaconing every 10 minutes. Some other buddies use it for all their Winlink projects. It also does amateur satellite complete with maps, azimuth & elevations; just add antenna. It’s a multi-purpose radio if there ever was one. Everyone loves this radio.

    A couple of firmware updates ago, they added a “feature” that causes the volume knob to be locked out when the keypad is locked. This is a HORRIBLE thing….more of a huge bug than feature. Maybe there are folks that use it and enjoy it, but we should at least have the option to turn that off.
    For myself, and I’m sure there are many like me…I want to be able to lock the keypad so that settings, channels, etc aren’t accidentally changed while carrying it on my belt and bumping around, but the volume knob needs to remain fully active so I can quickly adjust the volume from my belt without having to pull it off my belt and holding the unlock button then finally being able to adjust the volume as it is now. Please change this back or at least give the option to turn that off.

    THIS is a great radio! Programming via the BT app makes changing settings and adding frequencies on the fly a breeze. The little things are key for me. Turning the backlight on when a signal is rx, the indicator showing the last active band when operating double channel, PTT follow when operating double channel, RX LED on top of the radio so it’s not blinding you at night, USB-C battery charging directly on the battery and on the back of the battery instead of the bottom, My callsign displayed on the screen so I know I have my radio and didn’t pick up my buddies accidently. The day and time displayed on screen, loud speaker, programmable buttons with multi functions. The memory groups are great to have so I can easily switch programmed frequencies between my two QTH’s without having to reprogram the radio each time. APRS works well. The WX alert works well and I appreciate the alarm volume adjustment. A BT TNC is a great feature but I have not used it yet.
    A couple of changes I’d like to seen in a firmware update or GEN2 model. Stiffen the volume knob, If there is a way to change the FM radio frequency when turned on with the side button I can’t figure it out, maybe it’s just a quick access to the last used FM station. Improve APRS Messages and station list on the radio and the iPhone app. Improve the manual.

    Since you can’t dual monitor between channel groups. Hear’s a suggestion for those wanting to dual watch vhf and uhf at the same time. Usually I would put vhf on one group and uhf on a different group. But since you can’t dual watch between channel groups. Put your most monitored vhf and uhf frequencies lets say in group one. Then you can now dual watch vhf and uhf. Program your other channel groups however you like. All vhf or uhf or a combination of both. Hopefully in the future there will be a firmware fix so you can monitor between channel groups and maybe add more channel groups.
