    I only just received my BF-F8HP PRO a few days ago and its definitely an amazing upgrade to my UV5R. I was considering the UV-Pro since it has APRS (which is something I really want in an HT, especially while hiking and on road trips) but I didn’t want to be limited to the 6 banks/30 Channels per bank (180 channels total). I love having 10 different zones with 100 channels each (1000 channels total). I have my local repeaters, fire/police, marine, forest service, aviation etc… all in their own zone. Personally, I wanted the DMR-6X2 PRO even though I don’t use DMR that much, but, it doesn’t have Airband and 220 from what I can see.

    This radio has tons of great features, like adding your own picture to the start up screen and being able to add your own voice prompts to the keys and menus (I was planning on recording my kids voices for fun). The NOAA scanning feature is a nice touch, but I normally have the weather frequencies already part of my channel list. No complaints though.

    Pros of this radio:

    Just received it yesterday. Added a couple channels by hand, no problems. Connected to Chirp (be sure to select Pro) and had no problems loading 150 channels from a older Tri Band.

    The radio is amazing, in that the multi-zone and 100 channels per zone allowed me to have the same ops lists as my ICOM 5100AD mobile.
    Public service, air AM, GMRS, dual band ham and 1.25cm. Ease of programming with the BF CPS, although the current CHIRP would not recognize the
    PRO with the CP3 cord. Ease of switching channel mode to vfo mode with one button allows immediate access to four freqs.
    Battery Life okay so far – 1-2 days on use. CHIRP needs to catch up, as its spreadsheet style programming could be easier than the factory
    version, but this is okay for now.. The big switch to .data file from .img may confuse some, but code plugs are easy to build, and a doc explaining
    the field options in this version would be helpful. Great buy!

    First day with the radio. Right off, I would love to see a shortcut for changing zones. The audio output is great. I’ve only tested the transmit audio through a parrot, but it seems good. The radio is easy to program with chirp. Can’t wait to see a firmware update that will allow more uses with the gps data.

    This is the best budget radio I have come across to date and I have reviewed a couple of dozen in the past few months.

    Before I cover the hardware, I need to talk about BTECH. BTECH is an American firm which sells Baofeng (and other) products apparently adapted to fit the American market expectations. This radio obviously began life as just another one of the multitude of Baofeng models. I’ve tested dozens. But apparently, BTECH modified the firmware to do away with the usual foreign operator logic. This radio performs way over its price point and so does BTECH support. I had a question. I emailed early one morning. Within a couple of hours I had a friendly, coherent,precisely accurate response. I was impressed.

    The radio itself is great. It has most of the features now expected of radios in its price range including frequency search and copy, one touch NOAA, one touch broadcast FM. wide band reciever including AM, etc. I won’t go through them all. The company does an excellent job of spelling them out in the product description. But the over riding great features are the menu system and the memory system.

    The menu system is clear, highly intuitive and completely functional without glitches. If you are familar with HT’s within a few moments you will have it figured out and be able to do anything you want to do. I have Yaesu’s that I have had for years that I still haven’t mastered.

    The memory system is also highly intuitive and completely functional. There are ten banks of 100 channel slots. You can program different services and different regions into each. Again, in a few minutes you should have it figured out and be on your way to actually being able to organize and use the thousand memories that are common these days.

    The GPS system is equally intuitive. The set up is easy and once set up all you have to do is long press the menu button. Within a few moments it will acquire the satellite and you will have the correct time, your current speed, latitude, longitude and altitude. You can either send your own position or request the position of other members programmed into your GPS group. Another press of the menu button will then display the familiar compass rose showing you the heading toward other unit.

    The radio bench tested quite well. Into a 50 ohm non reactive load the transmitter produced 9.3 watts at 146.000 mhz, 7.9 watts on 446.000 mhz and 5.4 watts on 223.00 mhz. There were no spurious harmonics on 440 and 220. Two meters was problematic with a first harmonic at -20 db. Receiver sensitivity was greater than -130 db on all bands. These power and swr numbers should be taken with a grain of salt. The radio ships with two antennas, one of which is optimized for 220. While the radio performed more than adequately on these antennas, it performed better on one of the now standard 2m/70cm longer whips that are shipped with many Baofeng products.

    The radio is well made, ships with all of the needed accessories and comes very nicely packaged. I strongly suspect the units have been inspected again here in the US before they are shipped to the customer since mine came in programmed to a standard ham frequency.

    BTECH is truly a value added reseller. Their contribution to this standard Baofeng radio makes it one of the best values on the market today. I highly recommend the radio and the company.

    I can’t find the model BF-F8HP-PRO on the Radio Frequency Programmer App, should I select a different model? Or return this wireless Programer and buy the cp03 cable and use instead?

    Distorted audio on strong aircraft signals (using latest fw).

    I’ve only had this HT a few weeks but it seems really solid. Great display, GPS locks on quickly, and 10×100 memory banks provide excellent programming. Also great CHIRP support. But I do have some feedback which I hope can be factored in to future firmware releases:

    1. Letters on the keypad are much less helpful than long-press options to quickly activate radio functions
    2. Zone switching is painful. It should be an option for SK1 or SK2 to be programmed to cycle between zones
    3. When the screen blanks it is impossible to tell if it is on. A “heartbeat” on the front LED would be helpful (if there is no TX/RX)
    4. Make the SK1/SK2 more programmable — too few options now
    5. Provide an “LCD dim” option instead of just “on” or “off” (i.e. configure to dim after XXX seconds, and to turn off after YYY second)
    6. The secret single VFO display (turn off Dual Watch, turn on Single Watch) is great, but weird things happen if you switch to VFO B and then “scan”
    7. The GPS location sharing with another BF-F8HP Pro is fancy, but not very intuitive how to activate or use. Do all HTs need to be on the same frequency? When is it active? I only have one of these HTs so I can’t experiment, but even if I did I’m not sure what I’d expect to get.

    My first radio was a BF-F8HP, which I really liked, so the Pro was a no-brainer when B-Tech announced it. I also have a UV-5RM+, which is a similar case, but the PRO makes the plus look like a toy. The display works great outside and programming in a repeater through the radio is no big issue. This HT puts out plenty of power when transmitting. With a Nagoya 320, I was able to hit a repeater 30 miles away while I was camping to let everyone know how my trip is going. This is a great first radio or just a good solid HT to carry around.

    Received my radio on April 16th. After weeks of playing with it, as well as getting acquainted with the programming software, I like this HT. The audio output is loud enough, love the dual and single display settings. The BF-F8HP Pro is easy to hold onto while talking on the air, it’s a little taller than the UV-5R and is a bit hefty weight wise, but it’s comfortable enough for my use. I’m using a dedicated CPS for the F8HP, which I got from another website, to program the HT. I do have CHIRP, but the dedicated CPS allows me to adjust other settings that can’t be done with CHIRP. All in all, I’m happy with the F8HP Pro. It worked as expected, signal reports are good while checking into a net, it was affordable (cheaper than my ‘well known’ branded HT), and is fun to use. Having the longer Nagoya antenna really helps getting my signal out, no problems connecting to a repeater 15 miles downhill from my QTH. A worthy investment indeed for my money!

    Own a progression of other Baofeng radios, and the BF-F8HP Pro is a very nice addition.
    I usually leave the radio in scan mode, so having the little flashing green LED light on continually is a bit much.
    Hopefully in a future firmware upgrade there is an option to turn the light on or off.
    Otherwise, like the radio a lot.

    I think BF-F8HP PRO is currently the best value you can get in an analog handheld. I bought it to pair with my VX-6 and was able to duplicate the programming including my banks to make it a perfect match. Great transmit power on all 3 HAM bands with crisp audio in and out. The color display is excellent and the entire unit feels very solid. There are 3 programming options: The free CPS and firmware updater you download from BTECH, Chirp and a model specific programmer from RT Systems. This was supposed to be an “extra” radio but I like it just as much as any of my others.

    I have been interested in the BF-F8HP PRO since I had first seen it. Looked to be a promising radio, and so I waited to see how others thought about it, the pro’s and con’s. After the latest update offering, I was even more interested. I decided I waited long enough and finally went for it. Well, I’m not disappointed in the purchase at all. It does almost everything that I would want. The one feature I would LOVE to see included in an update is BDC-1200 signaling which is Baofeng’s version of Motorola’s MDC-1200. Using it allows radios like Kenwoods, Motorolas, Hyteras, ect. to see unit ID’s assigned to each radio via programming. Very popular in commercial radios like public safety radios.

    I own several Baofeng radios, including the AR-5RM, which in itself is a great radio. But since I got the BF-F8HP PRO, it is the only radio I use as a daily driver.
    The radio stays in scan mode most of the time, so I find the continous flashing green LED light a little annoying, … hopefully in a future firmware update, a setting will be included that will turn this feature on or off.
    Otherwise, this is a fine radio in every way.

    Absolutely love the BF-F8HP-PRO but one thing I run into is each time I program frequencies I need to go back and set up the scan zones again. Maybe I’m missing something, but I haven’t found a way to program with Chirp or CPS the scan set up for A/B. Always need to manually do it on the radio itself after PC programming.

    This is an impressive HT. BTech’s custom firmware is the star of this show. I was keypad programming the BF-F8HP Pro without reading the manual. I have other Baofeng, Wouxun and TYT HTs that all require use of a step-by-step cheat sheet for keyboard programming.

    My Surecom SW33+ SWR/Watt meter shows 11+ watts on 146.565 MHz, 9+ watts on 446.050 and 5+ watts on 223.000. The speaker audio is the best of ant of my HTs. I live in an apartment that is in a bit of an “RF Black Hole” which leaves me totally dependent on high-power HTs, because outdoor antennas are verboten. The OEM battery lasts for about 2 days with mostly listening and 10-15 minutes talk at full power. With a 3800 mah Baofeng battery (it uses the same battery and charger as my Baofeng AR-5RM), it runs for 3 – 4 days. And it feels really good in my hand with that 3800 mah battery, very much like the 1990s FT530.

    I had a problem trying tp finish programming with RT Systems software. It does not work with RT’s USB-K4Y cable, which works correctly with the AR-5RM, but it does works with RT Systems software using an OEM Baofeng. That is not really a problem because I had the cable that shipped with the AR-5RM.

    There are two thing I do not like. I would gladly trade the color display for the old style back-lit displays that you can read in sunlight with the backlight light off. The bright mufti-color displays are nice, but they do not show anything when the backlight is off, and they are also unreadable when wearing polarized sunglasses I would also be happy to give up the GPS for a VFO/Channel knob (the GPS antenna is located where the “flashlight” is on most other single-knob radios right at the middle of the top.

    I found a very annoying flaw with this radio… The monitor needs to be brighter to fight the bright sunny days. Even in a shade, it’s extremely hard to see the screen. We need a firmware update to fix this issue.

    I purchased two BF-F8HP PROs this year year due to all the positive reviews I’d seen on YouTube. The radios are exactly as advertised, and at this price point
    are a fantastic bargain. But the real reason I’m doing this review is the team at BTECH. I had some shipping issues with a carrier, but Katy and
    Hope went above and beyond to ensure that my Christmas was merry this year. In 2025, it is so refreshing to see that there is at least one company
    that still knows what customer service means. You can bet your sweet bippy that this “boomer” will continue to use BTECH as his source for Baofeng products.
    As soon as the wife ain’t looking, I got my eye on that new UV-Pro.

    Has a great set of features; plus it’s firmware upgradeable. Only sold by BTECH, which is fine. Audio quality is good both ways. Chirp compatible, as well as it’s own CPS. Great buy!
    Battery life isn’t the best with the stock battery; but a battery eliminator and larger replacement battery option eliminates this issue.
    Stock 220 antenna isn’t very good; but BTECH carries a great aftermarket antenna.

    Measured power: 2 meters 11 watts
    70 CM 7.5 watts
    1.25 m 4.9 W

    So, power is mostly below claimed wattage; but it’s great on 2 meters. Measurements were into a dummy load.

    Hi,
    Pleased with my first Baofeng.
    Good coverage even in my densely populated city.
    Took me a while to initially work out how to set-up access to our local repeater, but great when I had worked it out.

    Also nice to listen to the airband traffic from the airport 7 miles away, and the FM commercial radio broadcasts.

    The 70cm/2m stubby work ok out the box, but have also ordered a Signal Stick from SignalStuff for the 2m+70cm bands to see how it works out: I have not tried the 1.25m band out, yet, but expect I will need also a better antenna. Noticed I won’t have to get a MARS mod… but it is not something I will ever use.

    What would I like to see if I could add something to this handset: AM on all bands , and the 10m and 11m bands (Because CB is fun to hear-I will get keyed over for saying this).

    Affordable, you guys have done a great service to the radio community (new and experienced). I carry your radios around more than my expensive radios. No problem on a past new malfunction return. BF F8HP Pro, I have enjoyed this radio. Keeps getting better.

    This radio has surpassed expectations. Very easy to set up and program with Mirkit Radio USB connector. Works with Chirp. When in my shack I connect it to a Mirage BD-35 Dual band amp to get really clear transmissions. KF0TKD

    The BTech staff provides great customer service. The first BF-F8HP Pro I ordered didn’t work, so I sent it for service. That was not successful, so when I contacted them again, they immediately sent out a replacement that works perfectly. Programmed it with CHIRP and I’m ready to get on the air.. Thanks to Katy for her prompt assistance!
