What this lets you do

Choose Analog APRS for an RF packet path; choose Digital APRS for a supported DMR network path.

Analog APRS sends an audio-frequency packet on an authorized analog FM channel and can be heard by compatible local stations or digipeaters. Digital APRS sends position data through a programmed DMR channel and depends on the repeater/hotspot, network, destination ID, call type, and slot.

Neither path is automatically better. The right answer is the one your local network supports, that fits the coverage and privacy expectations, and that you can verify with one responsible test packet.

Choose in three checks

  1. Check the local RF APRS path

    If local APRS stations/digipeaters use an authorized analog channel that your radio can reach, Analog APRS may work without a DMR network.

  2. Check the DMR network path

    If the repeater/hotspot and network explicitly support Digital APRS, collect the exact destination, call type, slot, and report-channel requirements.

  3. Choose the path you can verify end to end

    Program one path, send one controlled report, and confirm both radio behavior and the receiver/network result. Keep the other path off until you need and validate it.
